My name is David Moravcik. Now I know what you’re thinking, but don’t let the picture fool you. No, I am not an international Czechoslovak parkour sensation. In fact, I wiped out right after this picture was taken. Nevertheless, a boy can dream…
I am however, the son of two lovely Czechoslovak immigrants who bravely risked it all to come to Canada as political refugees in the late 80’s. They settled in Halifax and nine years later I came along. As a first generation Canadian, I grew up with a fascination for different cultures. My innate curiosity drives me to always seek out new perspectives. It’s what led me to make the big move to Toronto, and it’s a theme that’s expressed in my work as a visual artist.
My love for photography can be described using some cliche about seeking new perspectives, but I already used that one. Instead, I’ll tell you that I’m just a guy who likes looking at cool things. Making it? Even better. Whether it’s a video to “galvanize a brand image”, or a graphic to “boost engagement”, my intention is to navigate the asteroid belt of marketing cliches with strategic grace. Or fly straight through it. All depends on your perspective.
Besides making cool videos and groovy imagery, I love to make a nice cup of coffee. My 6 years of barista work has not only trained me to be an espresso machine, barista-ing also means I have the necessary prerequisite to work in the creative industry. But truly, as someone who comes from a long line of wannabe Italians, when I’m asked “How do I take my coffee?” My answer is: very seriously. Some might call me a coffee snob but I don’t see it that way. When it comes down to it, my coffee preferences are the result of strategic decision making and good taste. A trait I carry through to every project, or deadline or asteroid that comes my way.
Whether it’s brewing the perfect cup of coffee, manoeuvring a vast asteroid belt or creating the ideal content for your brand, one can never be too precise, considerate or dedicated. When it comes to attempting parkour? Well, I've learned my limitations..
